Students and teachers from SEK International School Riyadh participated in the 16th edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This event, organized in collaboration with the Global Schools Program (GSP) and the G20 Global Land Initiative, highlighted the crucial role of education in ecosystem restoration and youth empowerment.
Students and faculty from SEK-Riyadh actively contributed to COP16 by presenting their project “Roots of Tomorrow: Planting Nature Restoration Labs in Schools.” Through this initiative, they shared sustainability practicesimplemented within their school community. The project includes waste reduction programs, access to clean water, and peer-to-peer education, demonstrating how schools can serve as drivers of change in the fight against climate change.
SEK-Riyadh teacher Batoul Smari participated in a Blue Zone panel, where she shared her experience in engaging young people in ecosystem restoration projects. Meanwhile, students Faris Albrahim and Almudena González led the moderation of a session in the Green Zone, showcasing their commitment to sustainable development.
SEK-Riyadh’s participation in this international forum reinforces the values of internationalization, social impact, and sustainability that define SEK Education Group. By collaborating with global leaders, NGOs, and political institutions, the school not only promotes the adoption of impactful environmental and social practices but also prepares new generations to tackle global challenges with innovative and collaborative solutions.
